A mandate or not a mandate?

Madam, – I am totally baffled as to the continuous use by the Opposition, your newspaper, commentators and people in general…

Madam, – I am totally baffled as to the continuous use by the Opposition, your newspaper, commentators and people in general of the phrase “the government had no mandate” to make decisions such as the EU/IMF bailout, Finance Bill, etc. Was it not elected fairly and democratically by the people of Ireland? Why have weekly opinion polls all of a sudden become the new democracy which dictates government policy? Should all government decisions in the future be based on weekly opinion polls and not taken by democratically elected representatives who are, I believe trying to make decisions in the best interest of our country?

Like it or not, the Government had a mandate. In electing them, we gave them that mandate, like it or not. – Yours, etc,
