A fine welcome for tourists

Madam, – I vacationed for the fourth and possibly last time in Ireland from the western United States for 15 days in September.

The total spent by this Irish-American tourist equals $7,100 (€4,800), or two months’ wages.

During my stay the roads were completely destroyed by construction work and detours. In two short stops in Loughrea and Doolin I received parking tickets while shopping that will cost me another €200 plus tax ($300).

I am sure your traffic wardens can tell a tourist from a local in these locations. Don’t you think that a warning would be a better way to welcome those who, according to your business pages, are the hope for the revival of the Irish economy – the tourists? Civil employees should at least make an effort to assist guests in finding their way around your counties and towns, especially to find parking or give directions with the construction. These fees for over-time parking on a public street are more than in any US city (we pay 50 cent per hour and maximum fine of $5).

Next vacation I will take my €5,000/$7,500 and spend a whole month living high on the hog in Iceland!
