Sir, – Further to John Horgan Irishman's Diary ("Countermeasures – ways around a dry St Patrick's Day", March 9th), another place where one could legitimately purchase and consume alcohol on St Patrick's Day was the village of Scotstown in Co Monaghan.
The fair day was traditionally held on the 17th of each month.
Unsurprisingly, the annual March fair was by far the best attended of the year. – Yours, etc,
