Voting age at local elections

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – Has consideration been given to reducing the voting age at local elections to 16 year olds?

Qualification to vote varies across local, general, European and presidential elections, with local election eligibility currently open to all residents over 18 and living in the local electoral area, regardless of nationality.

Extending the vote to 16 year olds at local elections may temper the fears amongst naysayers that TikTok will break the system (Opinion, Eoin O’Malley May 14th). Courting younger people at local elections may also help to increase their participation in all elections when they reach 18. – Yours, etc,

DAVE BRUEN,
