Southside’s Giant Redwood

Noble tree

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – Fionnuala Ward rightly bemoans the demise of the Giant Redwood in the Botanic Gardens (An Irishwoman’s Diary, April 29th). There is another Giant Redwood proudly standing on Dublin’s southside. It was planted prior to 1863 by whiskey merchant George Roe on his demesne at Nutley (now the home of Elm Park Golf & Sports Club). It is there because Roe engaged distinguished botanist and director of the National Botanic Gardens Ninian Niven to design a garden and lake at Nutley. – Yours, etc,

MARION WALSH,

Dublin 4.
