A Yugsolav citizen suspected of war crimes has said he would surrender to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague later today.

His lawyer said Mr Blagoje Simic, wanted for war crimes allegedly committed while he was mayor of the Bosnian town of Samac, was the first Yugoslav citizen to voluntarily hand himself over to the tribunal.

Mr Blagoje Simic

Yugoslavia's new reformist leadership has been under heavy international pressure to start co-operating with the tribunal.

"This act is absolutely voluntary," Mr Simic told reporters this morning at Belgrade airport from where he was due to fly to Amsterdam. "I'm absolutely convinced of my innocence and I'm sure I'll prove it," he said.
