Moscow - President Boris Yeltsin formally asked Russia's parliament yesterday to abolish the death penalty in line with commitments made to the Council of Europe.

The Duma, however, is unlikely to approve Mr Yeltsin's request before next December's parliamentary election. Russian public opinion remains strongly in favour of capital punishment.
