The World Food Programme announced today that its food stocks have been exhausted, leaving hundreds of thousands facing hunger in the aftermath of a series of earthquakes in poverty-stricken El Salvador.

A report out today by the UN organization said that the 450,000 food rations it had, have already been distributed after some 1.3 million people were left homeless by devastating earthquakes that rocked the country.

"The situation could become extremely serious in two or three weeks. That is why we are issuing an emergency call to the international community for it not to leave El Salvador without help," WFP spokesman Mr Alejandro Lopez said.

Since January, the WFP has distributed 2,300 tonnes of food such as corn, beans, oil and canned fish.
