A letter written by a former resident of the Goldenbridge Orphanage in Inchicore, Dublin, has won an An Post letter writing competition.

Ms Caroline Farrell, a mother of two from Lucan, Co Dublin, wrote her letter to David, a boy who came to her rescue at the orphanage 28 years ago. She was presented with a new Mazda car by Mr John Hynes, chief executive of An Post.

The competition attracted 5,500 entries and 100 were selected by a panel which included RTE presenter Pat Kenny. The winning letters were based on the theme of "I was there".
