A young woman who suffered leg and other injuries and was brought unconscious to hospital after being struck by a bus, in an incident in which five people died, has begun a High Court action for damages.

Three women and two men were killed in the incident in February 2004.

Sarah McNamara (24), Kilmacraddack, Leixlip, Co Kildare, is suing Dublin Bus over injuries sustained in the incident.

The company has admitted liability and the action opened yesterday before Mr Justice Vivian Lavan for assessment of damages.

Ms McNamara said she was standing at the bus stop on Wellington Quay on February 21st, 2004, when a bus mounted the footpath and struck her.

She fell to the ground and saw a number of people trapped under the bus and a woman and a girl under the back wheel. She lost consciousness and could not remember anything else.

Ms McNamara said she recalled hospital staff saying to each other that she was the only survivor of the incident.

It is claimed Ms McNamara sustained a crush injury and other injuries to her left leg and also sustained soft tissue injuries to her head and face.

She underwent three operations as a result of the incident. It was likely that she was going to have a severe functional deficit in her left leg for the remainder of her life, it was claimed yesterday.

The case continues.
