A woman was yesterday remanded in custody after she was charged with the murder of a father of four whose body was found with stab wounds in a flat in Clonmel in Co Tipperary on Wednesday morning.

Jacqueline Greene (38), Bianconi Drive, Clonmel, appeared at Youghal District Court, Co Cork, yesterday afternoon where she was charged with the murder of Declan Molloy (35) at Gaffney's Flats, Mitchel Street, Clonmel, on Wednesday.

Det Sgt Barry O'Riordan gave evidence of arresting and charging Ms Greene with the offence at 3.08pm yesterday. Ms Greene replied "not guilty - it was self-defence" after caution, Det Sgt O'Riordan told the court.

Supt John McCann of Clonmel Garda station told Judge Terence Finn that he was seeking a remand in custody back to the next scheduled sitting of Clonmel District Court next Tuesday.

Solicitor for Ms Greene, John Joy, applied for free legal aid and said that her family were concerned that she would receive appropriate medical treatment while in custody as she had a history of depression and was on medication.

Judge Finn noted Mr Joy's concerns and he remanded Ms Greene in custody to appear again at Clonmel District Court on February 27th, while he also ordered that she receive all appropriate medical attention while in custody.
