A 20 year-old woman has died following a multiple-vehicle collision in Co Limerick.

The woman was fatally injured when the car she was driving was involved in a collision which involved four motorcars at Ballymurragh, Newcastle West at around 10.10pm.

A four year-old boy, who was travelling in another car, was taken by ambulance to Limerick Regional Hospital where his condition is described as not life threatening.

A man in his 40s and a woman in her  30s were also taken to Hospital with minor injuries have since been discharged.

The road was closed for technical examination over night and has since re-opened.

Three other people died in separate road crashes over the weekend in Kerry, Limerick and Cavan.

A 27-year-old woman lost her life early yesterday morning on the main Abbeydorney to Lixnaw Road when the car she was travelling in went out of control.

She was a front seat passenger in the vehicle which was carrying six people including the driver. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident took place at 3.30am at Irribeg, near Lixnaw. No other vehicle was involved. Named as Louise McKenna from Ballinclogher, she was a mother of a six-year-old boy. It is understood the driver of the car was the woman's partner.

Four others were taken to Kerry General Hospital. Two were later released while the two others remained in hospital and were said to be in a stable condition. Gardaí at Lixnaw in Kerry are investigating the incident and the road remained closed for much of yesterday.

In Limerick, a 37-year-old father of two was killed in a motorcycle crash at the weekend.

Gary McInerney of Shoreside, Ballina, Co Tipperary, died after being involved in a collision with a car on the N7 between Annacotty and Kilmurry at around 7pm on Saturday.

He was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle but died a short time later from his injuries.

Originally from Woodview in Limerick city, Mr McInerney is survived by his wife Ciara, daughter, Ali and son Sam. His funeral Mass will take place tomorrow at 11.30am at Our Lady and St Lua Church in Ballina with burial afterwards at the adjoining cemetery.

His reposal will take place at his home this evening from 5pm to 8pm. Gardaí at Henry Street in Limerick are investigating the collision.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Cavan issued an appeal last night for witnesses to a crash near Bailieboro which left a 23-year-old man dead.

The incident took place at around 1.30am on the Bailieboro-Cootehill road, at Beglieve, Canningstown, and the road remained closed for forensic examination for several hours yesterday.

It is understood the man was seriously injured after his car crashed at the side of the road and he was taken to Cavan General Hospital, where he later died.

No one else was in the car, and no other vehicle was involved.
