A woman in her 60s has died and a second woman in her 30s is in a serious condition in hospital after a two-car crash on the M6 this afternoon.
The collision happened at 2.45pm between Moate and Athlone and both women were the sole occupants of the cars.
The injured woman was taken to Tullamore General hospital where her condition is described as stable.
A garda spokesman said prior to the collision a car was seen driving the wrong was eastbound on the westbound carriageway on the M6.
