A woman in her 30s escaped serious injury after her flat was deliberately set on fire in Co Derry last night.

A PSNI spokeswoman said two police officers raised the alarm after spotting the fire in the flat on Alexandra Road, Limavady at around 2 a.m. They managed to pull the woman out before the fire services arrived. She was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

An initial examination showed the fire had been started after materials had been pushed through the letter box and then set alight. The hall, kitchen and livingroom of the flat suffered extensive damage in the blaze.

A man is currently helping police with their inquiries.
