A woman (30) has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a man in Galway on Sunday.

Maura Thornton, a native of Spiddal, and with a more recent address at an apartment at Upper Salthill, Galway, appeared Galway District Court this morning.

She was charged last night at Galway Garda station with the murder of Mayo native Kevin Joyce (59) at the above apartment on Sunday night.

Gda Greg Flemming told the court that when the charge was put to her, Ms Thornton replied: "May he rest in peace".

Judge Gerard Furlong granted the accused free legal aid and he remanded her in custody to appear at the Courts of Criminal Justice in Dublin next Tuesday, August 9th.

On the application of defence solicitor Adrian MacLynn, Judge Furlong requested the accused receive medical and psychiatric assessment on her arrival at Mountjoy women's prison.

A postmortem carried out on Mr Joyce's body yesterday by Deputy State Pathologist Khailid Jaber revealed he had been stabbed several times. He died at the scene.
