A 42-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her partner in Carlow nearly two years ago.

Anne Berry appeared briefly at the Central Criminal Court this morning where she admitted killing Anthony Riordan (37) at his home in Barrow Mills, Graiguecullen in June 2009.

Wearing a black blazer and white shirt, Berry stood and pleaded not guilty to Mr Riordan’s murder, but guilty to manslaughter.

Mr Riordan, who was originally from Coolock in Dublin, was discovered in his house by gardai with stab wounds to his body. He later died in hospital in Kilkenny.

Pauline Walley SC, for the prosecution, informed the court that the manslaughter plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Justice Paul Carney directed that victim impact statements be prepared for Berry’s sentence hearing in July.

The court also heard that Berry has an “extensive history of contact with psychiatric services” and that she is currently an in-patient of St Luke’s psychiatric hospital in Kilkenny, and that reports on the matter will also be prepared for the sentencing.

Mr Justice Carney remanded her on continuing bail until July 4th, provided she sign on at Carlow Garda station on Wednesdays and Saturdays each week.

She was also instructed not to contact Mr Riordan’s family.
