The sections of Sandymount strand and the Tolka estuary in Co Dublin which enjoy protection under EU wildlife legislation have been extended.
New data on wildlife has indicated that adjacent intertidal areas also qualify for inclusion, and so the protection has been extended by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Ms de Valera.
