BAIL was granted by the High Court yesterday to Mrs Catherine Nevin, widow of a Co Wicklow publican, Mr Thomas Nevin, who is charged with his murder.

Mr Justice Carney granted bail after he was told the State had no objection to her release on certain terms.

The judge ordered that she be released on her own surety of £5,000 and an independent surety of £20,000. He approved Mrs Nevin's brother in law, Mr Patrick White, of Oghill, Kildare, as the independent surety.

Mrs Nevin (46) is to sign on at Wicklow Garda station every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. An undertaking was also given that she would reside at Ballynapark, near Brittas Bay, Co Wicklow, which is the address of the pub, Jack White's Inn.

The judge was also given an undertaking that Mrs Nevin would not interfere with witnesses or cause witnesses to be interfered with.

Mr Peadar O'Reilly, counsel for the DPP, said Mrs Nevin would be required to give an undertaking under oath not to apply for a passport.

Mrs Nevin, whose right hand and wrist were tightly bandaged, then went into the witness box and took the Bible in her left hand. She gave an undertaking that she would not apply for a passport pending her trial.

Replying to her counsel, Mr Huge Hartnett, she said she would not interfere with witnesses and would sign on at Wicklow Garda station at the appointed hours. She said her previous passport had expired approximately three years ago.

Granting bail, Mr Justice Carney said the bail bond would be entered into at Mountjoy jail.

Mrs Nevin was charged in the District Court last Monday with murdering her husband, and with soliciting three men to carry out the killing. Mr Nevin (54) was murdered at his pub, Jack White's, on March 19th, 1996.
