A number of controversial land rezonings in Co Wicklow will be debated by local councillors today at a meeting that is expected to attract significant public interest.

Wicklow County Council members will discuss whether to reverse the rezonings, which included the zoning of a 172-acre farm near Ashford for commercial development.

The land was rezoned for commercial development - to include a film studio and a shopping centre - after councillors were informed that Ardmore Studios was planning to relocate to the area from Bray. Ardmore Studios later denied it planned the move.

A spokeswoman for Wicklow County Council confirmed this morning that the controversial items passed by councillors in July appear on today's agenda.

They will be raised during discussion of a report from the county manager on public submissions following the rezonings, which were passed originally as amendments to the Wicklow County Development Plan.

The special meeting of the council is scheduled to run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., but it is expected that a further meeting will have to be held to finalise all the issues and rezonings involved.
