Wicklow County Council is to decide on Monday whether to adopt a local area plan for Greystones and Delgany which could see 1,500 people added to the population over and above what independent consultants proposed.
In recent weeks residents and residents' associations in Delgany and the new Charlesland area have met councillors seeking support to omit additional rezonings, at least until further consideration has been given to the impact of these changes.
According to the changes, Charlesland can expect an additional 210 houses with an estimated population of almost 700 people. Also earmarked for the area is a district shopping centre one-third the size of Dundrum Town Centre.
Evelyn Cawley of the Greystones Protection and Development Association (GPDA) said councillors had ignored their responsibility and role in achieving a workable plan that meets people's needs. "The amendments are developer-driven. There is enough land zoned presently to meet the requirements of the growing population in the area.
"The residents are concerned about the impact of these changes on the quality of life people have by the increase of residential development unnecessarily, additional traffic congestion on the N11 and the provision of no employment locally," she said.
In the Delgany and Blacklion areas boundary extensions and rezonings have been proposed.
