Weekend road death toll reaches five

Five people have lost their lives on the roads this weekend.

A 24-year-old man died when the car he was travelling in went out of control and crashed near Kenmare, Co Kerry at 3.30am.

The victim, a front seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, a man also aged in his twenties, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. No other vehicle was involved

The single-car crash happened three kilometres outside Glengarrif. The victim is believed to a Polish national.

In Navan, Co Meath, a 31-year-old woman died when the car she was driving went out of control and crashed into a tree at Mooretown on the Kenstown Road.

A passing motorist came upon the crash at about at 2.20am. The Fire Service was called to the scene to free the woman from the car but she was pronounced dead on arrival at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan.

In Monkstown, Co Dublin a 78-year-old male pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a car at the roundabout at the junction of Abbey Road and Stradbrook Road at 5.10pm yesterday.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead there at 11.40pm. Gardai from Kill-O-The-Grange Garda Station are investigating the collision.

In the North, a pedestrian died in Newtownards, Co Down. The young man was hit by a bus on West Street shortly before 9pm.

Gardaí at Midleton, Co Cork are investigating a fatal crash that happened at 6.30pm yesterday the Midleton to Youghal Road at Curragrine, near Castlemartyr.

A male pedestrian in his 60s died when he was hit by a vehicle. No other vehicles were involved and the occupants of the vehicle were uninjured.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Arklow, Co Wicklow are appealing for witnesses to the death of Daniel McDonnell in the town in the early hours of Friday morning.The 21-year-old died when he was hit by a car on Main Street.

Officers are looking for information from anyone who was in the vicinity of Main Street or Lower Main Street, Arklow between midnight and 3am on Friday.An incident room has been set up in Arklow Garda Station on 0402 32304.

A total of 29 people have died on the roads so far this year.
