The UN war crimes tribunal has rejected an appeal by three Bosnian Serbs convicted of mass rape in southeast Bosnia during the war and upheld their jail sentences.

It is the first time that the tribunal has given a final ruling on a case involving rape as a crime against humanity.

Dragoljub Kunarac, Radomir Kovac and Zoran Vukovic were sentenced to 28, 20 and 12 years in prison respectively for rape, sexual assault and torture of dozens of Muslim women when Bosnian Serb forces seized Foca in 1992.

"The appeal chambers dismisses the appeal brought by" the three defendants and "finds that the sentence imposed by the trial chamber is appropriate," presiding judge Claude Jorda told the hearing.
