Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh completed a terrific 179-1 treble when Pierrot Lunaire ran out an impressive winner of the Littlewoods Direct Imagine Appeal Top Novices' Hurdle at Aintree.

The pair had already combined to land an incident-packed renewal of the John Smith's Topham chase with 7-1 joint-favourite Gwanako and the John Smith's Mildmay Novices' Chase with Big Bucks.

The pair's banker of the day was Master Minded but the Cheltenham winner was well beaten by Voy Por Ustedes in the John Smith's Melling Chase.

Leading two out, Pierrot Lunaire (5-1) careered away from his rivals and was clear when he jumped the last.

He continued to go clear and went on to win by 14 lengths from Blue Bajan, with Lazy Darren another six lengths back in third.

Captain Cee Bee, the 5-4 favourite, was a big disappointment and was pulled up by Tony McCoy before the final flight.

In the day's opening race Big Bucks stayed on strongly to deny the pacesetting Battlecry.

Held up towards the rear of the field for most of the race, Big Bucks appreciated the step up to three miles and a furlong.

Jumping into the lead at the final fence, Big Bucks (11-4) went on to win by two and a quarter lengths from Battlecry, with the favourite Albertas Run nine lengths away in third.

Gwanako jumped beautifully over the big National fences and hit the front going well at the penultimate fence.

He winged the last and shot clear only to tire close home, eventually repelling 12-1 chance Irish Raptor by a rapidly-diminishing neck.

Bothar Na (12s) finished a further five lengths away in third, while 40-1 chance I Hear Thunder took fourth.

Of Pierrot Lunaire, Nicholls said: "We've done a lot of work with his jumping.

"He was second to the horse that won yesterday, Binocular, and this is just brilliant for Bill and Angela (Tincknell, owners), who are watching at home.

"They have been great supporters of mine and I'm really pleased they've got a good horse.

"I think he's very good and on his work with Celestial Halo at home the other day you wouldn't split them.

"He's on a roll and we've had a few reversals, but the horses are running really well."

Walsh added: "If you'd have said we were going to have three you wouldn't have thought Master Minded wouldn't have been one of them.

"A great day. He ran well at Cheltenham, Paul's kept him fresh and he's put up a really good performance."
