The number of staff infected with the winter-vomiting bug has risen dramatically at one of Dublin's main hospitals.

St Vincent's Hospital confirmed today that 143 of the hospital's 2,000 staff are on 48-hour leave with the symptoms, which include diarrhoea and vomiting. Yesterday the hospital said 110 of its staff were out on sick leave due to the bug.

St Vincent's Hospital also confirmed that about 170 of the hospital's almost 500 patients now have the highly contagious bug.

Up to 30 elective operations are expected to be cancelled at the hospital this week.
