Cairo - Egyptian security forces repaid the villagers who helped them to catch six gunmen in Luxor last November by opening fire and killing five of them as they protested against the demolition of their homes on Saturday, Siona Jenkins reports. The incident took after a convoy of policemen, city council officials and a bulldozer made its way to the village of Gurna, on the Nile's west bank, to destroy illegal buildings.
Local residents say that when the villagers amassed and threw stones to try to prevent the demolition, the police responded with tear gas and live bullets. At least 24 people were injured in the clash.
