The Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Rev Walton Empey, said last night. "The 'victory' gained by marching down the Garvaghy Road may well prove to be both an empty and costly one.Liveline programme yesterday, that the belief that violence could not attain its ends seemed to be rather hollow in the light of yesterday's events.

In a statement Archbishop Empey said that the people of this island "and indeed far beyond" have been "deeply shocked and horrified by the events of the last few days in Northern Ireland ...

"Our sympathy goes out to those who have been driven from their homes and to all those who fear a similar fate."

He prayed that "the voices of calm and reason will at last be heard above the madness of sectarianism".
