A New York bound plane today made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport following reports of smoke on board.

The Delta Airlines aircraft was carrying 276 passengers and crew on board when the captain decided to return to the Co Clare airport.

Flight DL112 departed Shannon for JFK at 1pm, over an hour behind schedule.

Around 20 minutess later the captain was told of reports of smoke in the cabin.

A spokeswoman for Shannon Airport said aircraft landed at Shannon 1.53pm, where it was met by the emergency services.

All the passengers were evacuated and remain in the terminal building.

The emergency services are investigating the cause of the incident.
