South African Retief Goosen and American Mark Brooks both parred the first hole to begin their 18-hole playoff for the 101st US Open championship at Southern Hills today.

In the 32nd playoff in US Open history, which teed off at approximately 5 p.m. Irish time, Brooks and Goosen both hit their opening tee shots on the fairway.

Goosen hit his second shot into a greenside bunker and almost sank his sand shot, lipping out after catching the left edge of the hole.

Brooks, from the collar, sent his long birdie putt about three feet past, but made the putt coming back for par.
