Washington - The lowest murder rate in the United States in more than 30 years contributed to the seventh straight drop in the nation's crime level, the FBI said yesterday.

The 16,914 murders nationwide last year worked out to one every 31 minutes, the FBI said in reporting final crime statistics for 1998. But it still was the lowest US murder rate - six killings for every 100,000 people - since 1967.
