HOUSTON - A jury has ruled that the US government can seize million from a former Mexican official after deciding that the money came from the drugs trade. Mr Mario Ruiz Massieu had filed a civil suit to protect $9 million, arguing that it was legitimate family savings from property investments.

The jury ruled on Saturday that Mr Ruiz Massieu - who before he fled Mexico was the investigator into the 1994 murder of his brother and general secretary of Mexico's ruling party - could keep $1.1 million.
