Up to one million cards and letters were not delivered before Christmas due to processing difficulties, according to An Post.
An increase in the number of letters being posted and changes to processing systems contributed to the delays, the company said.
The greater Dublin area is the worst affected area where an automated sorting system came on stream in mid November.
An Post said it hopes to have all outstanding mail delivered by tomorrow or Tuesday.
