Thousands of staff and students at Queen's University Belfast and the University of Ulster went on strike yesterday as part of a campaign for better, funding for higher education.

Staff have pledged to continue action, threatening to disrupt student admissions and exams in their continuing dispute over pay. The strike was the result of a 1.5 per cent pay increase offered to members of the Association of University Teachers which they considered unsatisfactory.

Pickets were placed outside the North's two universities and staff claimed a 95 per cent turnout for the strike. Students also came out in sympathy.
