The United Nations and its partners have appealed for €15 million in humanitarian aid for more than three million flood victims in Sudan.

The UN approved a grant of over €6 million from its emergency relief fund on August 17th, but it said more was needed to help those affected by the floods and appealed to donors to help fill the gap.

"These funds will enable us to save lives, to assist families who lost everything in gradually restoring their livelihoods, to prevent deadly epidemics, and to help children get back to school," UN Under-secretary-General for Humanitarian Relief John Holmes said in a statement.

The appeal will fund 48 projects, which will be implemented across the country by seven UN agencies, the International Organisation for Migration and 16 non-governmental organisations, the United Nations said.

With the money committed so far, the UN and its partners have been able to provide clean water to more than one million people and emergency shelter to 200,000, a UN statement said.

The additional money will help an additional 265,000 people who may be directly affected by new flooding, assist in providing chlorinated water to 3.5 million people, "repair the immense damage caused to livelihoods" and rebuild and repair 195 schools and other buildings and homes, it said.
