A detective trained to deal with children has been jailed for five months for what a judge said was an "appalling" collection of paedophile pornography.

When fellow officers raided the home of Kevin Dunks (27) in Hornsey, north London and examined his computer hard drive they found hundreds of images covering a wide range of carnal interests, London's Southwark Crown Court was told.

They not only included depictions of penetrative sex between children and adults, but various activities between consenting "geriatrics", and material clearly connected with the gay scene.

Judge Peter Fingret said there was no alternative to immediate custody for the one offence he had admitted of possessing indecent images of children last August.

The judge told the detective he had been "unimpressed" by assertions that he was only interested in adult material and had downloaded the paedophile pictures by mistake.

"You said you were trying to delete these images, but you transferred them to a disc and then stored the disc."

He added that in addition to the prison sentence he would have to register as a sex offender for seven years.
