A survey published today found British construction activity accelerated in January and that firms are confident of further expansion.

The Chartered Institute for Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) said its seasonally adjusted index for construction picked up to 57.9 from 57.5 in December.

The volume of new work increased at the strongest rate in three months and panellists noted local authorities and energy and water companies were principal sources of new contract wins.

Confidence increased to its highest level in 11 months.
