Growth in Britain's construction sector surged in November as housing and commercial activity, new orders and employment grew at a faster pace than the month before, a survey said today.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) said its construction purchasing managers' index rose to 56.7 in November from 55.0 in October.

It was the 70th consecutive month above 50, which divides expansion and contraction.

"Purchasing managers saw the rate of growth across the construction sector pick up during November having slowed down in the previous month. Growth was underpinned by an increase in incoming orders, resulting from improving business conditions and rising demand," said Mr Roy Ayliffe, director of professional practice at CIPS.
