A Co Tyrone farmer found guilty of cruelty to his animals has been jailed for two months.

David Reid from Tannaghlane Road, Caledon was also disqualified from having custody of livestock for the next five years and fined £1,800, plus costs.

Mr Reid, who pleaded guilty to six counts of breaking animal welfare regulations and a number of other charges in relation to animal identification, registration and importation breaches, was sentenced at Dungannon Magistrates Court yesterday.

In relation to the mistreatment of his livestock, he was convicted of one charge of causing, procuring or permitting the causing of unnecessary suffering of a bovine animal and four charges of permitting sheep to suffer pain or distress of which he would have been reasonably expected to know under the Welfare of Animals (Northern Ireland) Act.

He was also convicted of failing to comply with the terms of a notice served on him under the Welfare of Farmed Animals Regulations.
