Two women have died in road collisions in Co Wexford and Co Clare.

Two women have died in road collisions in Co Wexford and Co Clare.

A mother of six children was killed when her car collided with a van at Oulart, Gorey, Co Wexford on Monday at 2.10pm.

She was named locally as Eileen Lacey (51), who was from the area.

Ms Lacey was taken to Wexford General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian died when she was hit by a car while crossing the road near Kilrush, Co Clare, on Monday night.

Eileen O'Brien (75) was on her way to a bridge club when the incident happened at about 7.25pm on the main Kilrush to Kilkee road.

A stretch of the road was later closed off until yesterday morning because of dense fog.

Ms O'Brien is the mother of the well-known opera singer Edel O'Brien.

Twenty people have been killed on the roads this month.

The number of people killed on the roads so far this year is 357, 30 fewer than for the equivalent time last year.
