Two Tomahawk cruise missiles misfired and landed in an unpopulated area of Turkey yesterday.
The incident occurred yesterday evening, a US defence official said.
"Out of the thousands of Tomahawks that have been launched, you're bound to have a few that malfunction," said the official.
Earlier, a local governor in Turkey told Reuters a suspected missile fell near a village in eastern Turkey not far from the Iraqi border on Sunday, leaving a large hole in agricultural fields, but not causing any injuries.
