Two women were killed in separate traffic accidents over the weekend. The first happened at 10.30 p.m. on Saturday night when Ms Rosanne Connolly (29), Cappagh Road, Barna, Co Galway, died when the car in which she was a passenger crashed down an embankment at Garraum, Oranmore, Galway. At 1.47 a.m. yesterday, Ms Ann Linehan of Charleville, Co Cork, died after the car she was driving hit a wall at Kilbrony, Buttervent, Co Cork.

The accidents brought the number of people killed on the roads so far this year to 138. The figures, which are provisional, indicate that the number of road fatalities is again rising, with 138 people killed so far this year, while 130 people were killed in the first four months of each of 1999 and 1998.
