Two Dublin men have been charged with stealing €48,000 in cash and cheques from Dublin publican, Mr Charlie Chawke on Monday.

Mr Frank Ward (50), Knockore Avenue, Tallaght, and Mr Larry Cummins (53), Summerhill Parade, Dublin, were also charged with three firearms offences including possession of a firearm for the purpose of robbery and possession of a firearm for the purpose of resisting arrest.

The two men were brought before Judge John Brophy at Dún Laoghaire District Court yesterday where they were remanded in custody for seven days to Cloverhill Prison.

Det Insp Martin Cummins said the men were arrested at Sweetman's Avenue on Monday and charged at Blackrock Garda station the following evening. Mr Ward told the judge through his solicitor that he believed he had been unlawfully brought before the court. Judge Brophy noted this and said: "If Mr Ward so thinks, he has remedies open to him." Mr Cummins said he had "nothing to say".
