Gardaí in Cork have arrested two men and recovered a substantial quantity of cash as part of their investigation into an incident where a pensioner was conned out of his life savings.
Detectives arrested one man in his late 20s in Tower near Blarney at around 5.30pm and recovered a substantial sum of cash which they believe was taken from the pensioner on Sunday.
They later arrested a second man also in his late 20s in the Fair Hill area of Cork city at around 7.30pm while they also seized a grey coloured saloon car in the Fair Hill area which they believe was used in the theft.
Both men were arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and brought to Gurranebraher Garda Station for questioning about the theft of a sum understood to be around €25,000 from the pensioner.
Gardaí had appealed to the public for help in tracking down the two men who conned the pensioner when one of them called to his home in the Sun Valley Drive area on Sunday morning and pretended to be a garda.
One of the conmen called the home of the pensioner at Sun Valley Drive on the northside of the city at 6.50am and claimed to be a garda from Gurranebraher Garda station.
He asked the man had he any money as he needed to mark it so it could be identified in the event of a robbery and the pensioner produced a large sum of cash which he had withdrawn from the bank.
The conmen then grabbed the five figure sum of cash and made his getaway by running to a waiting car driven by an accomplice who took off at high speed.
