The charges came after a man in his 20s was also charged with a separate murder in Magherafelt.

He is believed to have been visiting friends in the area when the assault took place.

SDLP Cllr Jim Clifford, who represents the area on Derry City Council, said the death had stunned the community.

"The people here just can't believe that this has happened in their area. The thoughts and prayers of the community are with those who have been affected," he said.

A PSNI spokesman said they were treating the incident as murder and they have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

In the Magherafelt murder, the body of Declan McNeill (41) was found in the hallway of his home in the Glenburn Park area of Baron's Court.

A second man who was questioned about Mr McNeill's death was released without charge.
