Two people had a lucky escape yesterday evening when the aircraft they were travelling in crash-landed in a field in Co Meath. The pilot and a pregnant woman were the only occupants of the light aircraft, which was travelling to Sligo from Dublin when it appears to have experienced a mechanical problem.

It was about a third of the way through its hour-long journey when it got into difficulties. The pilot had no choice but to land and aimed for a field at Woodtown West near Kildalkey.

An ambulance crew went to the scene and confirmed there were two casualties. They removed both the man and woman to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan. Their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
