Two suspected Basque terrorists are believed to have died when a car bomb exploded in the coastal city of Bilbao.

The bomb went off in or underneath a parked Ford Fiesta in the Basurto neighbourhood on the outskirts of the Basque city just before midnight local time, according to a Basque Interior Ministry spokesman.

The spokesman said investigators were working to identify the remains of one or two people killed in the blast. No injuries were immediately reported.

The spokesman said authorities believed the explosion may have been a bombing attempt that went wrong, with the intended bombers blowing themselves up.

He said fragments of a pistol were found on the scene. Spanish radio said detonators and other bomb-making materials were also discovered.

Although there was no claim of responsibility, police were working on the theory that the explosion was the work of the Basque group ETA, the spokesman said.
