Meanwhile, a single man in his 20s was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Clonakilty, Co Cork. Mr Ken Hendrick, from Blackpool, Cork, was walking with a friend outside the town shortly after midnight last Friday when they were both hit by a van.

Mr Hendrick was pronounced dead at the scene while his friend was taken to Cork University Hospital, where his condition was described as comfortable.

A man was later arrested in connection with the incident. He was released after questioning and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
