Gardaí yesterday arrested two men in their 20s after a shot was fired at a house on the northside of Cork city in what is believed to be related to a feud between two families in the area.
The incident happened at around 2am at Kilmore Road in Knocknaheeny when at least one shot was fired through the front door of a house.
Four adults, including a woman in her 50s, were sleeping upstairs.
No one was injured in the attack.
Gardaí were quickly on the scene as a marked patrol car from Gurranabraher Garda station was nearby at the time. When officers heard the sound of gunfire, they drove to the scene where they spotted two men fleeing on foot and arrested them.
The two men were arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act which allows for detention for an initial period of 48 hours.
One man was brought to Gurranabraher Garda station and the second to Mayfield Garda station for questioning about the early morning shooting incident.
Gardaí also recovered a shotgun less than 200 yards from the scene of the shooting and it was yesterday being examined by Garda ballistics and technical experts who were seeking to establish if the weapon was stolen.
Meanwhile, gardaí cordoned off the scene of the shooting for technical examination while officers also carried out house to house inquiries in the area to establish if anyone witnessed the shooting incident or noticed suspicious activity.
Gardaí are also seeking a third man in connection with the attack.
It is understood that the shooting stems from an ongoing feud between two extended families on the northside of the city.
The feud has been going on for almost a year.
The shooting incident marks an escalation in hostilities between them.
