Reality entertainment TV is the underlying theme of TV3's autumn schedule, according to the station's director of programming.

Matthew Salway introduced the new season for the station at Spirit nightclub yesterday. TV3 presenters and news anchors, as well as UK soap stars, gathered in the city venue for an elaborate Moulin Rouge-themed launch.

The "reality" theme is evident in the continuation of regular shows such as X Factor, I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Love Island, as well as the announcement of a new reality quiz show. The Box, to be presented by Keith Duffy, will see contestants housed in a large floating glass box in a city centre location for 24 hours.

The quiz, now in pre-production, will run every night for three weeks and starts next month. Duffy said he was looking forward to being part of the live show, as he said he loved reality TV.

Along with the UK soap operas already showing on the channel, Channel 4's popular Hollyoaks will air from early next month, a show Mr Salway said was "perfect for our demographic".

New US imports include CBS-Paramount production Jericho, a drama based in a small Kansas town, and, from the creator of West Wing, Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip, starring Matthew Perry of Friends' fame.

Live coverage of the Rugby World Cup were also confirmed, with 10 matches, including Ireland's four qualifiers, to be transmitted live next year.
