The Hague - Prosecutors in the genocide trial of the former Bosnian Serb prison guard, Mr Goran Jelisic, said yesterday he was an eager participant in the murder of countless Muslims and called himself a second Hitler.

"Jelisic often set goals for himself by vowing not to rest until he had killed a certain total of detainees. Once even declined assistance from a guard, noting that he was still in `good form' even though he had killed over 60 people," the chief prosecutor, Mr Terree Bowers, told the court in his opening address.

Mr Jelisic (30) last month pleaded guilty to a string of murders of Muslims, but maintained he was innocent of the UN court's most serious charge - genocide.

But Mr Bowers yesterday called on the court to find Mr Jelisic guilty of genocide: "Because to the victims of Brcko, the face of genocide was the face of Goran Jelisic."
