Brasilia - Less than two months after Brazil's President, Mr Fernando Henrique Cardoso, presented Pope John Paul with a wooden statue of Saint Anne, Brazilians are clamouring for it back.

Residents of Paracatu, a historic town in Brazil's interior where the statue was carved in the 18th century, said the small image of the Virgin Mary's mother was given away without their consent and against the law.
